Der 1. Song besticht durch seine charaktervolle, kraftvolle „indische“ Melodie.

Vikash Maharaj sagt selbst: „it´s a very nice composition and strict melody“. Das Stück strahlt Majestät und Würde aus und eröffnet die CD mit einer “weiten indischen Landschaft”.

Im Zusammenspiel mit von Prabhash fantasievoll gespielter Tabla, lassen Vikash und Abhishek Maharaj Soli voller subtiler Emotionen und Anmut, spirituellem Tiefgang und Fluß, feiner Verzierungen und kreativer Improvisation auf Sarod und Sitar folgen, die den Zuhörer auf die spirituelle Reise mitnehmen wollen.

The first song captivates with its distinctive, powerful ”Indian” melody. As Vikash Maharaj himself says, ”It’s a very nice composition and strict melody”. The piece exudes majesty and dignity and opens the CD with a ”broad Indian landscape”. In combination with Prabhash’s imaginative performance on the tabla and Ralf Klotz’s meditative flute, Vikash and Abhishek Maharaj follow with solos on the sarod and sitar, full of subtle emotion and grace, spiritual depth and flow, delicate flourishes and creative improvisation, to carry away listeners on the spiritual journey.

2 Freedom of Soul

Nachdem die CD „Celebration“ mit einem typisch indischen Stück von Vikash Maharaj eröffnete, folgt an zweiter Stelle ein typisch westliches Stück von Ralf Klotz und eröffnet mit einem kulturellen Gegensatz. Dieser Song ist der harmonisch reichhaltigste von allen. Die vorherrschende Lead-Gitarre strahlt große melodischer Kraft und Freihheitssehnsucht aus. Ihr singender Charakter gipfelt in der Mitte des Stückes in ein langes Gitarrenduett und schließlich in echten Gesang von Alina Klotz. Ihr Text „God be in my head“ entstammt einem alten irischen Segen. „Freedom of Soul“ entstand als Willkommensgruß nach der ersten Begegnung des Maharaj Trio mit Ralf Klotz.

Having started the CD ”Celebration” with a typically Indian piece by Vikash Maharaj, the second number is a typically Western composition by Ralf Klotz that opens with a cultural antithesis. This song is the most profusive of all as far as harmonies go. The dominant lead guitar emanates great melodic power and a longing for freedom. Its song-like character climaxes in the middle of the piece in a long guitar duet and finally in real song with the voice of Alina Klotz. Her text, ”God be in my Head” has its origins in an old English prayer from the 16th century. ”Freedom of Soul” came into being as a welcome greeting after the first meeting of Ralf Klotz and the Maharaj Trio.

3 Fly away

startet mit einer von Abhishek Maharaj sehr gefühlvoll gespielten Refrain-Melodie nach dem Raga Bilawal. Als Begegnung east-west übernimmt nun gleich nach den ersten Sitartönen ein Saxophon, unterlegt von soften Jazzakkorden, die Führungsaufgabe. In der Fortsetzung verschmelzen Sitar und Saxophon miteinander beziehungsweise treten in Dialog miteinander. Das Stück schaukelt hin und her ohne sich festzulegen und steigert sich gegen ein offenes Ende hin.

...opens with a very sensitively played refrain by Abhishek Maharaj based on the Raga Bilawal. The meeting of East and West now begins directly after the notes of the sitar, when a saxophone takes over the lead, backed by soft jazz chords. In the continuation, sitar and saxophone fuse or enter into a dialogue with each other. The piece swings lightly to and fro like the wings of a bird without committing itself, building up towards an open end.

4 Flavour of India

gibt – wie der Titel verrät – einen Geschmack der indischen Musikkultur. Die Melodie basiert auf dem Raga Kirwani. In virtuosen Soli zeigt das Maharaj Trio sein instrumentales Können der Weltklasse. Das Stück hat einen positiv aufwühlenden, mitreißenden und ekstatischen Charakter und sorgt für gute Laune.

...gives – as the title says – a taste of India’s music culture. The melody is based on the Raga Kirwani. The Maharaj Trio demonstrates its world-class instrumental prowess with virtuoso solos. The delightfully stirring, captivating and ecstatic mood of the piece can’t fail to raise the spirits.

5 Two worlds

nimmt den Anfangsgedanken east meets west wieder auf. Obwohl Vikash Maharaj zunächst eine rein „indische“ Melodie erfunden hat, erinnert diese jedoch auch an westliche Kompositionen. Was liegt näher als der „einen“ Welt die „andere“ Welt dazu zu gesellen, indem die Violine ein Zitat aus Johann Sebastian Bachs „Air“ spielt, das wunderbar dazu passt.

...again takes up the concept of East meets West. Although Vikash Maharaj originally invented a purely ”Indian” melody, Western compositions also come to mind. What could be better than to combine both worlds by letting the violin contribute a passage from Johann Sebastian Bach’s ”Air”, which fits in very well with the Indian melody?

6 Celebration

Der Titelsong der CD wird seinem Namen gerecht: eine stetige Steigerung des Klanges führt zu einem feierlichen hymnischen Schluss. Moderne Elemente wie Taktwechsel und die Wahl des Instrumentariums gehören zu seinen Besonderheiten. Vikash´s virtuoses Solo unterstreicht den festlichen Charakter. Der Klang der Kirchenorgel und der Glocken gegen Ende zu erheben die festliche Stimmung und entführen in eine leuchtende spirituelle Feier.

The title song lives up to its name: the steadily swelling sound culminates in a celebratory, hymnic finish. Its distinctive features include modern elements such as rhythmical variations and the instruments used, chosen deliberately by Ralf Klotz, the composer, as elements of Western music culture. Vikash’s virtuoso solo underlines the festive mood. The sounds of the church organ and bells towards the end of the song further elevate the festive mood to create a brilliant, sacred celebration.

7 Beat of hearts

erinnert durch die Tonwiederholungen der Refrain-Melodie an Herzschläge. Prabhash nutzt das Klangspektrum der Tabla in vollem Umfang aus. Dabei trifft die an den menschlichen Pulsschlag erinnernde Spielweise der tiefen Tabla den Hörer ins Herz. Wiederholt zeigt Prabhash, dass er sowohl in ruhigen als auch virtuosen Passagen ein Meister von absolut präzisem und fantasievollem Tablaspiel ist, der es aber gleichermaßen versteht sehr differenziert auf die verschiedensten auftretenden musikalischen Ideen zu reagieren.

...is reminiscent of heart beats through the repetition of the notes in the melody of its refrain. Prabhash makes full use of the tabla’s entire sound spectrum. In particular, the throbbing sound of his deeper tabla, echoing the rhythm of the human pulse beat, goes straight to the listener’s heart. Once again Prabhash Maharaj proves that not only is he a true master of absolutely precise and imaginative tabla playing, whether in quieter or in virtuoso passages, but in the same measure understands how to respond to every nuance of a wide variety of musical ideas. The anthemic conclusion seals the bond between two beating hearts.

8 River of love

Die Melodie besticht durch ihre schlichet Schönheit. Sie erzielt mit ganz sparsam eingesetzten Motiven eine große Wirkung und ist auch für Menschen der westlichen Welt sehr eingängig. In gleichsam ruhigen Soli zeigt Vikash Maharaj einmal mehr seinen weltweit einzigartigen Stil, die Sarod zu spielen: viele gesangsähnliche Schleifer, Verzierungen und feine Tonabstufungen - und immer verbunden mit hohem persönlichem Ausdruck in allen Stimmungen – zeichnen das Bild eines Flusses der Liebe. Ein hymnischer Schluss besiegelt das Band zweier schlagender Herzen.

The melody enthrals with its simple beauty.It achieves a powerful effect through the sparing use of motifs that is no less appealing to listeners from the Western world. In comparatively tranquil solos Vikash Maharaj once again demonstrates his worldwide unique style of playing the sarod: numerous song-like slides, flourishes and subtle tonal gradations – always in combination with a high degree of personal expression no matter what the mood – convey the image of a flowing River of Love.

9 Monsoon Dance

basiert auf dem „Monsoon Raga“. Regen und Donner eröffnen bildhaft den Song von Vishal Maharaj. Während eines ausgedehnten Doppelsolos beeindrucken Vikash und Abhishek mit Repetitionseffekten, mit höchst variantenreichen Melodieideen und ihrer individuellen Art und Weise die Sarod und Sitar zu spielen. Im letzten Solo, gespielt von Ralf, ist der Klang der Shanai (Oboe) zu hören. Sowohl bei diesem Song als auch bei „Flavour of India“ ist eine kurze Impression eingestreut, in der Abhishek mit indischen Gesang zu hören ist, aufgenommen in einem Livekonzert.

...is based on the Monsoon Raga. Vivid sounds of rain and thunder usher in this piece by Vishal Maharaj. In an extended double solo Vikash an Abhishek impress with repetitive effects and the most varied melodic ideas and their way of playing the sarod and sitar. In Ralf´s final solo the sound of the shanai can be heard. Both this song and the ”Flavour of India” include a short impression, in the form of an overlay, of Abhishek singing. The clip is taken from a recording of a concert performed together at St. Martin's Church in Biberach, Germany.

Auch die neueste CD-Produktion „Celebration“ des Maharaj Trios atmet wieder den Spirit jahrhunderte alter, klassischer indischer Musiktradition, musiziert von der Familie Maharaj aus der heiligsten Stadt Indiens, der Pilger-Stadt Varanasi. Sie pflegen und entwickeln seit über 500 Jahren und vielen Generationen die Musiktradition des „wahren“ Indien weiter: auf uralten Ragas basierende „ausschweifende“ Melodien voller subtiler Emotionen und Anmut, spirituellem Tiefgang und Fluß, feiner Verzierungen und kreativer Improvisation. Diese Musik rührt an der Seele des Zuhörers, ihr Klang stößt auf Resonanz.

Diesmal ist Pandit Vikash, Prabhash und Abhishek Maharaj an einen befreundeten europäischen Musiker herangetreten, dessen musikalische Wurzeln in der geistlichen Musik Westeuropas liegen. Ralf Klotz beschäftigt sich als Kirchenmusiker seit vielen Jahren gleichermaßen mit klassischen und populären Fremd- und Eigenkomposition im instrumentalen und  chorischen Bereich. Er ist außerdem schon mehrmals mit dem Maharaj Trio in Konzerten aufgetreten.

Ralf Klotz arrangiert die Songs der Maharajs im worldmusic Fusion-Stil und ergänzt sie mit eigenen Improvisationen. Er geht bei dieser Crossover-CD eine respektvolle Synthese von stilistisch typisch indischen Wendungen und populär-jazzigen Klangmöglichkeiten ein. Außerdem werden die Arrangements durch das Verwenden eines abwechslungsreichen farbigen und breit gefächerten Instrumentariums ausgeweitet. Ralf Klotz steuert zwei eigene Songs bei („Freedom of Soul“ and „Celebration“) und lässt seine Tochter Alina Klotz, die schon mehrere Musikauszeichnungen erhielt, mit ihrer Stimme („Freedom of soul“) und ihrem Violinspiel bereichernd mitwirken.

Herausgekommen ist diese CD, die – denn was lag näher in der Kombination klassischer indischer Musik und westlich sakraler Musik - den Titel „Celebration“ erhalten hat. Eine Feier im musikalischen, aber auch im religiösen Sinn. Neun Songs, die das Zusammentreffen und miteinander Verschmelzen zweier Welten („Two worlds“) zelebrieren und feiern.

Die Songs sind insgesamt von einer meditativen, beruhigenden Grundstimmung getragen. Eingängige Refrains, die zum Mitsingen einladen, wechseln sich mit kunstvollen und virtuosen Soloimprovisationen ab. Innerhalb der Solos kommt es immer wieder zu lebendigen Dialogen.

As with past productions, this latest CD of the Maharaj Trio, „Celebration“, breathes the spirit of the centuries-old classical Indian musical tradition of the Maharajis from the holy pilgrimage town of Varanasi, who for many generations now have cultivated and developed the musical heritage of the ”true” India: ”extravagant” melodies based on ancient ragas, full of subtle emotions and grace, spiritual depth and flow, intricate flourishes and creative improvisation. This music stirs the soul of the listener; its sound finds resonance.

This time Pandit Vikash, Prabhash and Abhishek Maharaj approached a friend of theirs, a European musician whose musical roots are to be found in the sacred music of Western Europe. Ralf Klotz has for many years now devoted himself in equal measure as a church musician and music teacher to classical and popular works, both of other composers and of his own composition, in the fields of instrumental and choral music. He has also appeared in concerts with the Maharaj Trio on several previous occasions.

Ralf Klotz arranges the Maharajis’ songs in prominent fusion style and complements them with his own improvisations. In this crossover CD he enters into a respectful synthesis of stylistically typically Indian phrases and popular-jazzy tonal possibilities. In addition, he expands the arrangements by including a wide range of colourful and diversified instruments. Ralf Klotz contributes two songs of his own composition (”Freedom of Soul” and ”Celebration”) and allows his daughter Alina Klotz, who has already won several music awards, to join in, enhancing the music with her voice and violin.

The result is this CD, which has been entitled ”Celebration” – after all, what could be more appropriate for this symbiosis of classical Indian and Western sacred music? A celebration both in a general and in a religious sense. Nine songs which celebrate and honour the meeting and fusion of two worlds.

The prevailing mood of the songs is a meditative, soothing one. Catchy refrains that invite one to sing along alternate with elaborate and virtuoso solo improvisations. Time and again, lively dialogues arise within the solos.
